Still Life

Still life is a collection inspired by my background in art. Growing up, I loved making still life paintings of everything I could imagine. Many of them had something to do with fashion.

Since fashion played such a large role in my art growing up, I wanted my art to play a role in my fashion designs now.
I have always been inspired by collage work, and collage played a big role in this collection. I took some of the important elements of both collage and still life works, like variety, texture, and balance, and used these principles for the basis of my designs.

I wanted to justapose the idea of being still with dresses that offered a lot of movement and flowed when worn. I incorporated petal shapes to mimic flowers and lots of voluminous layers. Gathers became a core element in each design because they gave each dress body and movement. I also played with proportion, layering, and asymmetry.

I had the incredible opportunity to display my work at the Iowa State Student Innovation Center from December to February as part of a larger display of student work showcasing the variety of talent in Iowa State's AMD program.

Before the Fashion Show in April, I will be adding to my collection and making adjustments to the pieces I have already made so they fit the models I'm working with! I'm excited to be working with such a great team of students to bring my collection to life.

The Inspiration

The Progress (initial model fitting)

Look 01

What's next? For this look, I will swap the long sheer skirt for a print. I will change the buttons from 1.5" spacing to just 1" spacing to allow for a better fit. I will also add a lace underlayer and bow on the bodice front for some more modesty.

Look 02

What's next? For this look, I will shorten the blue petal at the front waist and give it more volume. I will adjust the straps to better fit my model's measurements. I will also add a blue tier at the very bottom to make this dress full-length.

Look 03

What's next? I will adjust the bubble hem to give it more volume and lengthen it a few inches. I will reduce the length of the bow so it doesn't appear as overpowering on her shoulder.
